BREAKING: Republicans Melt Down Over Trump's Iran War
Good evening, this is Really American. It is Thursday, July 9, 2026. Trump restarted his war with Iran and Republicans are in panic mode.
The Iran ceasefire is dead, American bombs are falling again, and House Republicans are saying the quiet part out loud about what this means for November. Kash Patel is now under formal investigation for treating the FBI like a personal travel agency, complete with VIP snorkeling trips and a fleet of BMWs. In Houston, ICE is pressuring the only witnesses to one of its own deadly shootings to sign paperwork and leave the country. And at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, workers spent the day draping the North Portico in a photorealistic tarp so nobody can see what Trump is doing to the front of the people’s house. It is a lot.
Before the news, you need to understand what is happening to American media right now, tonight, while you read this.
The Ellison family controls CBS News and CNN, with Bari Weiss installed at the top of both. Bezos owns the Washington Post. Murdoch runs Fox and just swallowed Roku for $22 billion. Nearly every major outlet in this country now answers to a billionaire with business before this administration, and the window to fight back is closing faster than most people realize. Really American answers to nobody but you. We are fully reader-supported, editorially independent, and unbuyable, but only for as long as readers step up. If you have been reading on a free subscription, do not wait for a better moment. There isn’t one. Upgrade to a paying membership right now. Not tomorrow. Tonight.
REPUBLICANS PANIC AS TRUMP REIGNITES IRAN WAR
Trump declared the Iran ceasefire “over” on Wednesday, and his own party is melting down about it.
The U.S. military hit at least 170 targets inside Iran over the last 48 hours after Trump blamed Tehran for continued attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran answered with strikes across the region, hitting targets in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. The peace deal Trump spent months bragging about lasted barely a month.
According to reporting from Politico, House Republicans are in open panic about what this means for the midterms. One House Republican put it bluntly: “Not screwing us might be his goal, but he’s screwing us into political oblivion.” The same lawmaker said midterms are “beyond Trump’s focus zone” and compared him directly to Iran’s leadership, saying survival, control and self-enhancement drive both.
Republican strategist Matthew Bartlett was just as brutal. “We have absolutely no economic message, and now we have a muddled, messy international message.” Meanwhile, lawmakers in both parties are hammering the Pentagon over a $67 billion war funding request the administration cannot explain in detail. That is $67 billion on top of everything else, for a war Trump claimed he had already won.
Gas prices are climbing into the busiest travel season of the year, and every mile of your summer road trip is about to cost more because Trump’s peace deal collapsed. His own party knows it. That is why they are panicking.
PATEL’S LUXURY SPENDING SPREE UNDER INVESTIGATION
Kash Patel is officially under congressional investigation for living like a sultan on your tax dollars.
Rep. Jamie Raskin and Sen. Dick Durbin, the top Democrats on the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, sent Patel a letter demanding a full accounting of his spending as FBI director. The allegations include “VIP snorkeling” trips in Hawaii, jet skiing, helicopter tours, and a fleet of BMW X5 SUVs purchased for his personal use in place of the bureau’s standard Chevy Suburbans. Sources told the committees his jet setting is “out of control,” and that an FBI office in Wellington, New Zealand may have been opened partly to justify a sightseeing trip.
It gets worse. The Independent reports that Patel allegedly retaliated against FBI personnel in Brussels because they “failed to ensure you were adequately entertained,” and that his prioritization of personal entertainment may have driven the head of the FBI’s international operations to resign this year. Even Republican Chuck Grassley demanded answers about the BMW purchases back in May.
This is the same Kash Patel who is suing The Atlantic for $250 million over reporting on his drinking, and who promised to take an alcohol screening test if Sen. Chris Van Hollen took one too. Van Hollen posted his results the next day. Patel never did.
“The American people deserve an FBI Director focused on keeping us all safe rather than jet-setting to check off personal bucket list items,” Raskin and Durbin wrote. He has until 5 p.m. on July 22 to respond. Every jet ski, every helicopter tour, every BMW came out of your paycheck. Congress is finally demanding the receipts.
ICE PRESSURES WITNESSES TO ITS OWN DEADLY SHOOTING
An ICE agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston on Tuesday. Now ICE is trying to get the only witnesses out of the country.
Salgado Araujo was 52 years old, a father of three who had lived in the United States for 35 years and ran a small construction business. He had breakfast with his wife, picked up his coworkers, and was driving to a job site when ICE officers in unmarked cars stopped him and one of them shot him in the abdomen. He is at least the tenth person to die in Trump’s immigration enforcement campaign. No officer has been charged in any of those deaths.
His brother and two coworkers saw what happened. All three are now in ICE detention, where officers are pressuring them to sign self-deportation paperwork. Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, told The New Republic the men “hold the key to what actually happened” and said ICE is “trying to get rid of them as witnesses.”
The government’s story already has holes. Homeland Security claims Salgado Araujo “weaponized his vehicle,” but admits the officers were not wearing body cameras. ICE made the identical claim about Marimar Martinez in Chicago last year before prosecutors dropped every charge against her. Officers stripped the ID from Salgado Araujo’s body, and he arrived at the hospital as a John Doe. His son learned his father was dead from a Facebook video, recognizing him by his voice crying for help.
When the government kills someone and then deports the witnesses, that is not law enforcement. That is a cover-up, and it is being carried out in your name with your money.
TRUMP HIDES THE WHITE HOUSE BEHIND A FAKE FACADE
Trump covered the front of the White House with a giant photorealistic tarp so Americans cannot see what he is doing to it.
Workers spent Thursday draping the North Portico in a massive covering printed with an image of the very entrance it hides, making it look to passersby like nothing is happening at all. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum says the project started because Trump noticed “door dings in the pillars” while greeting a world leader. Trump claims crews have already stripped 150 years of paint off columns he says were “treated very badly by a lot of presidents.” He offered no evidence for any of it.
Per The Independent, Trump ally Rodney Cook, who heads the federal arts commission, has teased replacing the White House’s two-century-old Doric columns with ornate Corinthian ones to match the ballroom Trump is building on the rubble of the East Wing, which he demolished in October. Trump has already torn up the Rose Garden for a Mar-a-Lago style patio and is pouring a granite helipad into the South Lawn.
The White House does not belong to Trump. It belongs to you. He is remaking the people’s house into a gold-trimmed monument to himself, and he put up a fake front so you cannot watch it happen.

I thought this is the People’s House? Don’t we have to be consulted before work is done on it? He is only a tenant. Can we sue him?
I would be that trump is putting his name all over the White House! Or maybe he is putting graffiti up, or maybe he is decorating the columns with his bitcoins...We will not know until he unveils it! It won't be good, not matter what it is. Why isn't he using the money to fix the reflecting pool? Oh, that was caused by vandals (sure it was!). Trump must stay up nights trying to find more ways to spend our tax dollars!
