TRUMP’S DOJ DROPS THE REFLECTING POOL CASE IN HUMILIATION

Trump’s prosecutors hauled an Olympic athlete into court over the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and tonight they had to admit the whole thing was a lie.

The Justice Department dropped its case Friday against David “Davey” Hearn, a former Olympic canoeist they’d charged with destruction of property and accused of doing more than $1,000 in damage to the pool. NBC News reported that prosecutors folded after the Interior Department handed over documents showing the damage came from a botched job by the contractor, Atlantic Industrial Coatings, and had nothing to do with vandalism at all.

His lawyer didn’t let them off easy. Steven Levin said the case “should never have been brought,” called the government’s approach “ready, shoot, aim,” and said the feds owe Hearn an apology. When a Justice Department arrests a patriotic American for a crime that turns out to be a contractor’s paperwork error, that is not law enforcement. That same IRS settlement quietly shields Trump, his sons, and his company from tax prosecution, and on Friday the Trumps filed to appeal a judge’s ruling that the whole lawsuit was brought in “bad faith” to hand the president immunity. Trump wants taxpayer money flowing to the people who stormed the Capitol and a permanent pass on his own taxes, and he just said so out loud.

MISSING MCCONNELL AND THE AUTOPEN THEY WON’T EXPLAIN

Republicans spent a year screaming that Joe Biden’s autopen was a national scandal. Now Mitch McConnell’s office won’t say if his own signature is real.

McConnell hasn’t been seen in public since he was hospitalized on June 14, and this week a letter to Trump went out signed by him and the rest of Kentucky’s delegation. When the Daily Beast asked a simple question, whether that signature was handwritten or produced by autopen, his aides refused to answer. His chief of staff, who pulls down $226,000 a year, just declined.

Trump and his allies turned Biden’s autopen use into a monthslong crusade, insisting Americans deserve to know whether their elected officials are actually signing things themselves.
